Jim Cawthorn

Cawthorn was a British fan artist long associated with Michael Moorcock (they collaborated on the fanzines Ergo Ego, Flail, and Eustace) and he created the first British graphic novel of The Jewel in the Skull, based on Moorcock’s novel of the same title. Cawthorn began his career with in fanzines in the 1950s. In the 1960s, he was a staff artist at New Worlds.

Early on, Cawthorn was a fan of Edgar Rice Burroughs which led to meetings with other fans and contributions to the fanzine Satellite in 1953/4 and to the ERB fanzines, ERBania and Burroughsiana in the mid-1950s. The latter was edited by Mike Moorcock. He also did art for Ratatosk, Les Spinge, Eldritch Dream Quest, Satellite, and Amra.

In the later 50s was a member of the North East Science Fiction Society and later helped for the Newcastle SF Circle. The first BFS Awards were presented in the form of a scroll designed by him.
