Following his 2008 diagnosis of colon cancer, Lake enjoyed an outpouring of support from science fiction fandom. Along with Ken Scholes, he presided over the 2011 Hugo Awards as Master of Ceremonies at Renovation. The whole genome sequencing of his cancer was the subject of an exhibit at LoneStarCon 3, where he was also honored at the Hugo Award Ceremony by Toastmaster Paul Cornell.
His 2004 novelette "Into the Gardens of Sweet Night" was nominated for the Hugo Award.
