- Early days: No significant bidding in advance of the con. (Maybe talk at Midwestcon?) Site of following year's convention was chosen by a vote at the business session which was part of the single-track program and so, in theory, attended by everyone.
- E.g., selection of 1949 Worldcon at Philcon I.
- At some point nomination speeches by well-known pros started.
- Later mail ballot was added.
- At some point bid parties became the norm.
- Switch to two-year lead time.
- Switch to 3-year lead time
- Switch back to 2-year lead time.
