Clifton Amsbury

(July 16, 1910—May 28, 2007)

One of the founders of the Science Correspondence Club. According to Frederik Pohl, Amsbury was “The first organized fan anywhere.” Amsbury, who was active as early as 1928, was also a convention goer and participant throughout his life. According to Warner, Amsbury was the only fan of consequence to have been fighting in World War II prior to Germany's invasion of Poland, as he was a member of the International Brigade in Loyalist Spain.
