The concept behind Chi-Fi was to offer a larger exposure to media fandom in a fan-run setting within the city of Chicago, which had only hosted Worldcons and gate shows for several decades. Chi-Fi 1 was slated for the weekend of March 27-30, 2014. On January 14, 2014, the committee announced it would not take place because a senior hotel staffer referred to the con attendees as "Freaks" and the hotel refused to support the con's harassment policy, although the hotel denied those charges and stated that the con has requested to be let out of their contract and the parties determined it was mutually beneficial to do so.
Chi-Fi held a one day event on March 29 at the Palmer House and is currently planning to hold their first full convention in 2015.
