Betty Ballantine

(b. 1919)

Betty Ballantine is a publisher, editor, and writer. She and her husband Ian helped create Bantam Books in 1945 and established Ballantine Books in 1952. They became freelance publishers in the 1970s.

She was GoH at Noreascon Three, the 1989 Worldcon.

Betty and Ian Ballantine won one special World Fantasy Award for professional work in 1975, and another one shared with the creators of The High Kings (Bantam, 1983).

She and her husband were both inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame in 2008, with a shared citation. She was GoH at World Fantasy Convention 2004 and at Norwescon XVI in 1993, though she did not attend.

She wrote a novel, The Secret Oceans, published by Bantam in 1994. The book is “a modern-day, ecology-oriented 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea for kids.”
